Beginning of Sefer Yetzirah

In Hebrew, Sefer ספר is a book - comprised of letters forming words that tell a story. The Hebrew letters are seen as the building blocks of Creation, in fact, the Sefer Yetzirah later calls letters “stones that build houses”.
In Hebrew Sefar ספר means cipher and relates to numbers. in Hebrew Sefirah ספירה is counting. The 10 Sefirot of the Kabbalah are related to numbers. The word cipher also relates to coding, for example, by translating letters into numbers, Gematria, and is an important part of the Kabbalah.
Sippur סיפור is the Hebrew word for story and shares the same the same root as the other two Sefarim. Stories are comprised of numbers of letters joined together to create words, sentences, chapters, books. The story that the Sefer Yetzirah is referring to here is the Story of Creation in Genesis where the name of God - Elohim - appears 32 times.
These 32 Wondrous Paths of Wisdom are later identified in Sefer Yetzirah as the 22 Hebrew Foundation Letters and the 10 Sefirot of Nothingness.
