"3 Mothers א Aleph, מ Mem and ש Shin are Air אויר (avir), Water מים (mahyim) and Fire אש (aish). Fire is above, Water is below, and the Breath of Air balances between them.

Mem hums, Shin hisses, and Aleph is the Breath of Air between them. (Sefer Yetzirah)

This picture can be used as a focus for meditation.  Sit comfortably and become aware of your chest rising and falling with the Air of your Breath.  Breathe in through your nose down into your belly with your lips closed.  This is the Mem.  Open your lips and breathe out through your teeth.  This is the Shin.  Repeat this as long as you are comfortable.

If you want to deepen this meditation, After the in-breath, pause for a few seconds before you release the out-breath.  Be mindful that your chest is full of Air. Breathe out, and pause for a few seconds before you take an in-breath. space in-between the in-breath and the out-breath. Be mindful that your chest is empty of Air.

Becoming comfortable in transitional or liminal spaces - the spaces in-between  - helps us become more Spiritual.  In the quote from Sefer Yetzirah above, the Hebrew word for Breath is רוח (pronounced ruach with a guttural ch) which also means spirit. However, it can also be read revach רוח which means space.  Thus, Mem hums in the in-breath; Shin hisses in the out-breath; Aleph is the spiritual space in-between them.
