Beginning of Sefer Yetzirah

Printer-friendly versionSend to friendPDF version

This picture contains the Hebrew words that comprise the Beginning of Sefer Yetzirah (The Book of Creation):

"With Thirty-two Mystical Paths
of Wisdom

engraved Yah -

YHWH Tz'vaot, Elohay Yisrael, the Living God and King of the World, El Shaddai, Merciful and Gracious, High and Exalted, who Dwells forever and whose Name is Holy

He is lofty and holy-

and created His World with three Sefarim, with Sefer, with Sefar, and with Sippur."

The 32 Paths refer to the 10 Sefirot and the 22 Hebrew Letters.  Also, 32 is the gematria of לב Lev, the Hebrew word for heart.  32 also refers to the 32 times the Name Elohim appears in the Story of Creation (see my picture 32 Paths of Creation).

The Three Sefarim refers to the Letters (Sefer) and the Numbers (Sefar) that comprise the Story (Sippur) of Creation.  Some commentators relate them to Chochmah, Binah and Daat (Wisdom, Understanding and Knowledge).
