Here is another colorful version I made of the Sefirotic Tree of Life. In the Lurianic Kabbalistic tradition the straight lines of the Tree - particularly the three straight vertical columns - represent our ability to choose good from evil; or to act with mercy (associated with the right column), with judgment (associated with the left column), or compassion (a blend of the two associated with the middle column). This 'Straight' aspect is the deeper and more profound aspect of our being and of our relationship with the Divine, and it is grounded in our nature - represented
This is a new painting that looks like something one might see under a microscope. Thus the title - Microkosmic. To me it looks like cells that have a fractal nature - self-similar but in different sizes. Some of the cells also contain several smaller self-similar cells. This painting has a happy feeling for me and seems to be 'dancing' with vibrant life.
This is a watercolor painting I made in the early 1980's based on the psychedelic art used on album covers and Filmore concert posters, but using Hebrew letters. I wrote the entire first chapter of Psalms starting in the center and going outward counterclockwise. It is quite hard to read even for fluent Hebrew speakers because the letters flow into each other. Also because some of the letters are in hot colors on a cold-colored background; whereas some are the opposite - cold colors on a hot-colored background.
I painted this last year with many layers of watered-down acrylic paint. As I was working on this piece, it gradually developed into this image which appears to be a galaxy (such as our own Milky Way) or a cosmic event in deep space photographed by the Hubble Space Telescope. I am very happy with how this painting came out and I am glad to make it available to people as a high-quality Giclee print on canvas.
I made a poster version of this picture in the early 1990's which has sold out so I finally reproduced it and made it available as the high quality Giclee print. The red Shin ש and the blue Mem מ boldly show their triangular and rectangular forms - Shin, the 21st Hebrew letter (2+1 = 3 sides of a triangle); Mem, the 13th Hebrew letter (1+3 = 4 sides of a rectangle).
This painting illustrates a Kabbalistic meditation that was described to me by a very successful and spiritual friend. The prophet Ezekiel saw a vision of the Merkava (God's Chariot or Vehicle). The Kabbalah teaches that every human being becomes a Merkava by aligning oneself to God. The Sefirotic Tree of Life is a map we can use to help us connect to God's Light and Love. The Tree of Life in this meditation is formed with Thirteen Sefirot - a motif I have used in several paintings. These form two Magen Davids (Stars of David) inbedded in two spheres that
When the Sefirot are first presented in the Tanya (the classic text from the first Lubavitcher Rebbe) they are called Three Mothers and Seven Doubles. The Three Mothers refer to the three higher Sefirot Keter, Chochmah and Binah (Crown, Wisdom and Understanding). The Seven Doubles refer to the seven lower Sefirot Chesed, Gevurah, Tiferet, Netzach, Hod, Yesod and Malchut (Love, Strength, Beauty, Victory, Majesty, Foundation and Kingship).
